Why the name " Choose Yourself "
- A message from our founder
Like many African women, I grew up in a very patriarchal society, bounded in a culture where girls are taught since the young age to perform for society. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said: “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful.”
I grew up always checking if I was being too ambitious. I had crazy dreams then, and I still do. I was told to be successful, but to not threaten “the man.” Everything about womanhood had revolved around men. I grew up seeing fellow girls as competitors, and I dealt with body image issues. Am I beautiful like her? Do men like me the way they like her? It took me learning how to love myself and choose myself first to even feel comfortable with fellow women. As I allowed other women to be who they were,
It took me learning how to love myself and choose myself first to even feel comfortable with fellow women. As I allowed other women to be who they were, I developed a passion for working with the power of young women. Helping young women embrace their power is especially important for women who have grown up in societies that have routinely underestimated them is how we shape more effective , just and powerful leaders. I believe women need to know that they can trust themselves and they can choose themselves. This is why I’ve chosen to begin the initiative.
While the focus of Choose Yourself is primarily on love of self, our larger mission is to liberate women. I want to help raise a generation of young women leaders who believe change starts with themselves regardless of their living conditions.
Every person’s life matters. Every person can make an impact and change our world. It is everyone’s responsibility to build a fair and equal world for both men and women.
It starts by raising fearless girls, it starts by teaching boys about consent. It start by acknowledging women’s oppression. It starts by realizing women deserve social and economic power as well. It starts by women who CHOOSE THEMSELVES
